A century of children’s rights: a legacy and an international commitment that stand the test of time

Dive into a century of commitment to children’s rights, from the Geneva Declaration of 1924 to the United Nations Convention of 1989. This publication outlines the key developments and highlights the ongoing commitment to protecting children.

The year 2024 symbolises a century of struggle and significant advances in children’s rights. The adoption of the Geneva Declaration in 1924 was an historic milestone, laying the foundations for an international movement to defend children’s rights. This publication pays tribute to the pioneering spirit of a social movement that is often overlooked in the collective memory. It is the result of a conference given by Dr. Philip Veerman, organised by OKAJU and held on 23 February 2023 at the Mënscherechtshaus in Luxembourg, under the auspices of the Luxembourg Commission for UNESCO.

‘Today, 100 years after the Declaration of Geneva and 35 years since the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), we are unfortunately still faced with the risk of regression in the field of children’s rights and protection’, notes Charel Schmit, Ombudsman fir Kanner a Jugendlecher, in the preface to the publication, and points out that : ‘Children’s rights are non-negotiable. Together, we can ensure that they continue to play a central role in our society and that children grow up in a safe, healthy and nurturing environment.

You can consult this 72-page publication, including Dr Philip Veerman’s article and a chronology of children’s rights, below. We invite anyone interested to add to this chronology and encourage the development of historical studies on the development of children’s rights in Luxembourg.
