OKAJU is here to listen to any child, parent or professional who wants to better understand children’s rights. Whether you need information or advice, or have witnessed or been a victim of a violation of these rights, our referral service is here to inform and support you.
Have your rights not been respected? Then get in touch!
When and how we intervene
OKAJU listens to every child, teenager, parent or professional concerned about respect for children’s rights. Have you got any questions, are you worried, or do you simply want to understand these rights better? Depending on the situation, we give advice, observe what is happening and work together to find solutions. Our goal: to ensure that children’s rights are respected.
Anyone can contact OKAJU by telephone, e-mail, post or via an online form. Every request is carefully examined, whether it is a complaint, a question or a query. If the situation does not fall within our remit, we will refer you to the appropriate service. All procedures are free of charge and confidential.
When the situation requires it, a meeting is arranged to better understand the facts. Active listening helps to understand the concerns expressed. With the person's consent, other relevant parties may be contacted to obtain a complete picture of the situation.
The information gathered is examined in light of children's rights, legal texts and recognised practices. Field visits may be organised to observe the context and engage in direct dialogue with the people involved.
Solutions may be proposed to improve the situation*. If necessary, recommendations are made, with a deadline for their implementation. Some may be made public anonymously, particularly when they concern several children.
* OKAJU is not a judge or court. It cannot intervene in ongoing legal proceedings. Its role is to provide information, advice or recommendations based on children’s rights.
OKAJU works to raise awareness, promote and protect the rights of children and young people. He listens to you and guides you impartially to
any questions or problems.
OKAJU offers impartial listening and personalised support for any questions or complaints related to the rights of children and young people.
OKAJU may intervene on its own initiative in situations where the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is not being properly implemented.
If you work with children, you can report any situation that concerns you to us. Okaju is here to help you protect children’s rights.
Unlike a traditional referral — where the person must identify themselves and follow a formal procedure — reporting via the Reporting Office allows you to raise the alarm confidentially, securely and without exposing yourself.
Your report will be handled seriously, confidentially and impartially by our specialist team. Only authorised persons will have access to it — no other departments, nor SeeZam.
If you request it, an appointment will be made. OKAJU will listen, identify any violations of children’s rights and provide advice on how to remedy them.
With your consent, a case file may be opened, and the parties concerned are invited to give their opinions in order to find an amicable solution.
If no agreement is reached after an impartial review, OKAJU may issue recommendations within a set time frame. Recommendations of a general nature may be published anonymously.
